The Jemolo Archive (A Photographic Archive of Architecture and Art) was established by photographer Andrea Jemolo in 1988. Featuring over 15,000 images, it records his photographic campaigns, spanning from the late 1970s to the present. Over the years his work has been commissioned by important museums, prestigious art magazines and publishing houses, as well as by several architectural firms. In addition, the Archive also includes a small collection of photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries – all having a social, political or historical theme – and a section devoted to advertising and political postcards.
The Archive offers clients the opportunity to draw upon an original photographic resource that is uniquely selective both in technical terms and from the point of view of style. Our main objective is to offer photographs of the highest quality. Most of the pictures included in the archive were taken with large format cameras on 4x5 inch (10x12 cm.) plates, and then digitalized with an Imacon Flextight scanner. Since the taking of picture with digital cameras was introduced beside the analogical, only the very best of digital back brands have been adopted. If needed, on client's request, we can offer tailor made scans of a higher resolution than that, already high, normally offered.
The two main sections of the Archive are devoted to the history of art and to architecture. Italian art and architecture are especially well represented, in particular the Renaissance period and the Baroque (architecture, painting and sculpture). Another two important sections of the archive are devoted to the Paleo-Christian and Byzantine art – with pictures taken in Russia, Crete, Syria and in the monasteries of the Balkan regions (Serbia, Kosovo; Croatia) – and to European Medieval Art, a vast collection of photos ranging from early medieval High Crosses in Ireland to the churches and monasteries along the Camino de Santiago and to the Romanic and Gothic cathedrals of France; in these two sections Italian art is also well represented. A comprehensive research is devoted to Egypt, with images of Pharaonic and Coptic art. Many photographs were taken inside the Egyptian Museum of Cairo. A section deals with Nigeria's ancient artefacts belongings to its various cultures: Nok, Igbo-Ukwu, Ife, Tsoede e Benin. Modern and contemporary architecture is especially well represented in the Archive. This is because over the years Jemolo's focus has gradually evolved towards an idiosyncratic and specialist approach, covering different architectural epochs or single projects of famous contemporary architects: from Renzo Piano to Tadao Ando, from Richard Meier to Zaha Hadid.
